MEET RUTH...
Thank you for sharing your story with us Ruth, tell us a little about yourself...
My name is Ruth Mendez, I’m a police officer and need coffee every morning! I am the mother of a 19 year old son. I also am a freelance makeup artist on the side. It’s my side hustle and I love every minute of it.
If you could hold on to one memory from your life forever, which would it be?
When I held my son in my arms for the first time! I was so young and scared ! But as soon as he laid on my chest, I knew it was love at first sight!
Tell me a little about what you wanted to be when you were little and why?
I always thought I’d be a nurse. I always loved working and caring for people. I saw my father struggle with substance abuse and I as well as my sister always helped my mother who was deaf. I just wanted to help people.
Can you tell us about someone who has had a big influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?
I have had many beautiful friendships along my lifetime who have inspired me in many different ways. If I had to choose one person it would be my sister. She has gone through many hardships in life and always seems to push through and comes out stronger through every challenge. I’ve learned from her that the sky is the limit and that we are stronger than we think.
What do you feel most grateful for in your life?
My health and a peaceful home. Our health is everything ... as long as we have our health there is nothing in this world we can not overcome or do! Peaceful home ... it is so important to me to come home to a drama/toxic free environment. I work in a very chaotic setting and so home is my safe place.
What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned in life?
That you have to believe in yourself and be your number one cheerleader. I’ve overcame a lot of doubt and I still have to work on this, but it is so important to truly believe in yourself and push yourself to take chances and follow your dreams!
Tell me about your passion in life.
Helping others and inspiring them to be better. There are so many topics I am passionate about such as policing, community outreach, makeup and beauty makeovers. I also love talking and learning about personal finance!
How do you deal/cope with stress?
Music, dance, and exercise ! I also love listening to podcasts. It’s also important to talk about your stress with your family and friends! And seek to seek professional help if needed .
What steps have you taken or are currently taking to activate that passion?
Like I said makeup and makeovers I do on the side. I’m hoping to grow my audience and increase the amount of clients I have! I'm also hoping my department somehow would be interested in teaching personal finance to officers . That would be a cool idea as well! Amongst other things.
Tell us about your fears.
If I’m brutally honest .... A devastating illness or losing my life on the job. I try not to think about these things but they do creep up from time to time. I work on not stressing out about things I can not control and focus on the ones I can.
How do you stay motivated?
Keeping present that I want to live a long healthy life! And seeing my son turn into a respectful and kind young man just keeps me motivated to continue to move forward!
Tell us what do you do in your free time?
Love working out from home. My basement has become my sanctuary since the pandemic hit! I have recently gotten into soul cycling and I’m in love! I also love to dance, spend time with my boyfriend. I also love spending time with my girlfriends and going out on brunch, lunch and dinner dates.
Tell us how important it is to be doing what you love.
If you do what you love ... you don’t work a day in your life. Find your why and what makes your happy and stick with it!
If you could change the world by doing ONE thing, what would it be?
More kindness and less hate.
Ruth, thank you so much for being vulnerable and sharing so much of yourself with us. We pray that God continues to protect and bless you each and everyday. Continue to strive to change the lives of others by educating them about personal finance and with makeovers. Ruth, you are already changing lives by serving and protecting our communities and for that we thank you for all that you do!
