The holiday season is a time when families look forward to getting together and celebrating whatever the calendar says to celebrate. While some look forward to these special days, I personally have grown to dislike them. Not the meaning of the holiday, because I get the reason why we’re celebrating. What I don’t like is all the hype that comes with it. To some, it’s just another day, or a day off from work. Everyone has their own feelings and perspectives about holidays, and no one should feel bad or forced to celebrate if they choose not to! I wasn’t always like this. I come from a big extended family that, if the calendar marked a holiday, we all got together. Bring out the dominos, the grill, the pool or the games, we were ready. It wasn’t until I got a job in retail, got married and had kids that my excitement for holidays slowly started disappearing. I’ll be completely honest, packing up 3 kids in a car and driving house to house is exhausting! You have to make sure you pack enough diapers, wipes and clothes (I’ve been there and it’s not fun when you have to run to Walgreens on a holiday to buy wipes.) Not to mention, moms with small children don’t get the opportunity to enjoy themselves. They’re too busy looking after their children, making sure they don’t burn themselves with fireworks or break a ceramic Santa Claus that’s been in the family for generations... Maybe one day my excitement for the holidays will return. One year I may even decide to stay home and do my own thing, no matter how others feel about it, who knows? I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels like this, and unfortunately I haven’t experienced an “a-ha” moment to tell you if it’ll get better. However, what I can tell you is that until we get the courage to not worry about what others think, and do our own thing, we will never fully enjoy a holiday for what it truly is. In the meantime, my advice is to be cordial and try to make the best of it. Love Jomy
