How do you deal with unsupportive family members?

Growing up most of us are taught that family is the most important circle you will ever have in your life. We hear that blood is thicker than water and that family comes first.

But what happens when you feel unsupported by your own family?

Do you speak up and address it?

Do you accept it and keep living your best life?

In the Bible Joseph was mistreated and sold by his own brothers. However, when his brothers needed help little did they know that the one who was in position to help them was Joseph himself. Nevertheless, even though Joseph never forgot what his brothers did to him he didn’t hesitate to help them.

Are you like Joseph?

In all reality we all deal with this issue differently. Some of us hold grudges and disown our family for not showing up while others have the ability to accept it. So since everyone is different and there really isn’t a right or wrong answer I asked this question on social media to help us understand how people deal with this.

The top 3 responses were...

  1. You don’t deal with it. It’s their problem.
Some people are able to continue living their life regardless if their family supports them or not. As long as they respect you as a person your relationship with them goes untainted.

  1. Talk to them about it and tell them how you feel.
If your comfortable talking to your family about your feelings then do so. Having an open conversation with anyone can bring to light what you need from them and what they need from you. Sometimes they just truly do not understand why support is important to you.

  1. Accept it and love them from a distance.
Sometimes this is the hardest thing anyone can do. Whether it’s your friends or family. You have to think about what is best for you and understand that even though they do not support you that does not mean they do not love you. Some people honestly do not know how to show support. In the end it’s about what you need in this season of your life. Regardless if they can be a part of it or not, you continue to love them, include them and be there if they need you.

You see, there are different ways to deal with this. I believe that God has a way of placing people in your life when you need them the most. At the end of the day you have to do what is best for your life and do what makes you happy. Regardless of who is in your corner.

Great post! This goes for unsupportive friends too.
It’s okay ... make peace with it and move on.
Continue to love them 💙
