This is Us

This weeks episode of “This is Us” really hit home for me. If you haven’t watched it then I apologize because I going to give you a small spoiler. Randall and Beth are my favorite power couple in this show. They are the definition of two different people working at a marriage.

In this specific episode Beth and Randall are still fighting. Beth feels that she is always the one bending in the relationship to make sure Randall’s aspirations are met. During a brief conversation between them Beth asks Randall if he remembers when they were locked in an escape room and right before their girls had a break down they both found a door. She goes on and tells Randal, “I don’t see a door in this,”hinting that she does not see a way out of this situation.

Does this sound familiar? A lot of married couples in this day in age are like that. Either one person puts their goals on hold for the success of the other or they just stop trying. Beth and Randall reminds me of my marriage. Marcus and I are complete opposites. I am an emotional person, he is not. I can get loud when having a discussion, he is not. He likes being around a lot of people and that is an area I am still working on. No matter how different we are there is one thing we know for sure. We work better together than apart.

Marcus and I have literally grown up together. From the moment we got married at 19 we knew that in order for us to make this work we needed to work together as a team and communicate. Every situation and every obstacle that we have gone through no matter how tough it has been we have literally talked through it. There has never been a moment where I thought what I was doing was more important than what he was doing. We run everything by each other resumes, interviews, business ideas and of course the usual what’s for dinner. We are a team!

I think that part of marriage is slowly starting to lose its value in this day in age. Everyone is so focused about me and there is no room to focus on US.

Marriage is about US.

You are a unit.

A team.

He should fit in your dreams and you should fit in his. You should want to help him reach is goals and he should make sure you reach yours. That is the key to a successful marriage. TEAMWORK.

At the end of this episode, Randall tells Beth that he has decided to resign from his political seat. The drive to and from the office is too much and if it’s costing him his family it’s not worth it. Beth walks over to Randal and says, “Randall I found a door!”

Ok I cried like 3 times during this so insert crying emotions here...

Beth found a door. She found a way to make it work where Randal could continue his political adventure and she could open up her dream studio. She made it work! I am here a living witness to tell you that what ever you are going through in your marriage, you can make it work. Nothing is more important than this union. Make it work, compromise, scale back and count on each other. If two 19 year old pregnant Newley Weds with a part time job at Walgreens and Home Depot can do it I know you can.

Will it be easy? No

Will you fight? Yes

Will you disagree? Of course

But the end result it worth it because you both work better together than apart!
