We live in an era where we will do anything to go viral on social media. You see young girls posting pictures looking twice their age and you see young men posting pictures about things that shouldn’t even concern them. All for the likes or to go viral. When will we start teaching our children that social media likes do not define them. That they are famous enough by being exactly who they are.
Believe it or not we are allowing social media to raise our children. Girls think that they need to wear 10 pounds of makeup in order to be beautiful or show some skin in order to gain followers. Children are literally going through depression and anxiety all because they do not have hundreds of followers on Instagram. All because they feel that they are not liked!
We have to step in and do something. If you have a direct connection to a child even, if they are not your own, you have a responsibility to pour positivity into that child’s life. Don’t over think it just talk to them, laugh with them, hang out with them and show them someone does care. Show them that there is more to life than social media and it shouldn’t matter who liked or commented on their picture.
We have to make them realize that they are “Famous Enough by being themselves.” They are unique and no one can ever be them. God has made them to be authentic and strong. They need to know that! We need to teach them that it does not matter what others think of them. They don’t need to live their life for anyone else but God. The world is a dangerous place and if we do not start raising our children with the love of God; they will never value their life or anyone else’s.
I get scared sometimes because I am raising my girls to not care about what other people think. That regardless of what they hear they know they are beautiful, strong and intelligent. They are being raised to be themselves no matter what anyone else thinks. They are being raised to speak their mind but to be respectful. They are being raised knowing that they can accomplish anything as long as they work hard for it. I worry that I may be setting them up for heartbreak because the world is so cruel. The world is so quick to tear down anyone’s self esteem and to dim whatever light a child has.
However I am reminded that the Bible says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
This scripture reminds me that the way I raise my children is what they will consider to be “normal” to them. So when they grow up they will gravitate to what they are accustom to. So I will train them up to live positive lives so that way their light can shine even through the darkness of the world. I will train them up to know that as long as they are God’s child they are famous enough. Our children do not need validation from social media to make them feel loved and valued.
